My newest pursuit is understanding how the impermanence of hate can be explored through national symbols. I believe it’s one of an artist’s responsibilities to confront and question the world we inhabit, especially in relation to culture and identity. Some of the questions I have been asking myself are listed below:
How does collective pride reflect a community’s values, and how are those values made visible in material culture (flags, quilts, monuments, etc.)?
What is lost when we surrender control of collective symbols, and what becomes possible when we do?
How do hateful symbols shift over time? Do they lose power, transform, or take on new forms?
Can the impermanence of hate be visualized materially, through fabric, stitching, or decay?
What role does forgetting, covering, or repurposing play in dismantling the permanence of hate?
How can art spaces foster dialogue around contested symbols without reinscribing their harm?
